So yesterday, just as the first stars were coming out, I heard what sounded like coyotes yipping off in the woods to our southeast. I've heard coyotes around here before. In the last few years, a couple of duplexes have been built on the land that abuts our woods back there, but I've heard -- and seen -- coyotes even so. They have little fear of humans these days.

So last night, I go out on to the deck to hear them better. High excited yips, a whole little pack of 'em.

And then, the wind carries their eerie song closer to my ears...

"Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are ..."

It was a pack of little girls, probably  about kindergarten age, outside the duplex at dusk.

Well, we have real coyotes, too. Some of them have come quite close to the house. Last summer, one of my cats (this one) decided to GO AFTER IT!! I ran down from the deck, grabbed a broad leaf rake and stood between her and the woods (where the coyote was) until it moved on a little. I was hoping to scare it off if it decided to turn around and head back to the lawn. Then I threw the cat inside the house.

Haven't seen your post, yet. *goes off to look*

Oh, and our coyotes are a lot bigger than western ones. There is thought that the western coyotes, moving east, interbred with wolves. They are known to kill cats.
