A week ago today we were having a Nor'easter with rain, snow, etc. The poor birdies of spring were dumbfounded and flocked to my feeder in droves, waiting their turns like planes circling O'Hare.
Yesterday and today? Mid 70s. Sunny.
I spent an awful lot of time in a print shop yesterday and today (may make that a separate post) while a new employee (very nice kid, just too inexperienced to have been left on his own) kept trying to give me a proof of the town newsletter I'd brought in, so I could sign off on it and let the printing commence. A real comedy of errors, shall we say. I felt sorry for the poor guy. Anyway, I spent a lot of time leaning against the counter and gazing out the big windows onto the sidewalk, engaging in people watching.
Like magic. here were college girls going by in spaghetti strap tops and shorts, hordes of young mothers pushing baby strollers (haven't seen any of them on the streets in a long time, only moms with babies in Snuglis) , a lovely mother-daughter duo going by eating ice cream cones. It was as if the entire town had screamed in exultation, "Finally!" and run out onto the streets. (I would have at least have had to grope around under the bed to find the plastic storage bin that contained my spaghetti-strap tops, if I even had any. These girls obviously had them waiting within easy reach.)
The gardens are still well behind, here. I spent some time getting the old leaves and dead growth off of my front flower circle and the little patch by the south side of the house. I usually have daffodils by now, but they are only just poking through the earth. Chives are up in the veggie beds, but the mint is still invisible. (Was hoping for a mint juelp. Ah, well.) iI also sat on my deck in shirtsleeves while I had a late lunch, listening to the tree frogs peeping in the pond next door.
And yes, I did buy pansies today! A 9" pot, now on my steps.
Yesterday Samurai had an unexpected afternoon off from her job because the car wash's "track" was broken. So she went out and took a shedding blade to the horses. Their hair is covering one part of the paddock! Today she went with a friend to Anime Boston (she went last year with him and his parents and had a great time). My husband is off right now trout fishing in a nearby stream -- his first expedition since last year. Another sign of spring.
I should be working on another newsletter, but I think I'll take a shower and start dinner prep.
Which reminds me... the cats haven't been in here demanding dinner, and it's past their usual dinner hour. Perhaps they are out celebrating, too.
Mice and short-tailed shrews, beware!
