you so rock!!!!! but you know, i still expect your picture. COME ON!!!!!!!!! Give a hard working gal a present! *so hard working I'm on LJ all morning ha ha!
Yep, the real Matt Groening. He was a year ahead of me at Lincoln High School in Portland, OR. He was doing cartooning on his own even then -- showed a very twisted short little one at a school art festival.
Many of his characters' names in the Simpsons come from street names in our neighborhood: Lovejoy, Flanders, Quimby... Mr. Burns might be from Burnside. Can't remember if there's a Pettygrove in the series, but it's the type of name he wouldn't have been able to resist snagging.
His sister Lisa was a year behind me. I knew Matt (although I'm sure he didn't know me--maybe knew my name, but that was about it), but I never knew his sister. He was also on the newspaper staff when I was a junior and he was a senior; we juniors taking journalism sort of "interned" with the oh-so-mighty seniors in the last part of the year, as we'd be taking over after they graduated.
The funniest thing to me, though, was noticing early in the Simpsons series that there was a principal (was there one before Skinner?) who was the spitting image of our Vice Principal of Discipline. And the smarmy guy who takes Marge to the prom (and then Homer rescues her when she refuses the guy's advances) looks just like the smarmy older brother of my friend Scott, who was in Russian class with me. The brother would have been in Matt's class.
