ar_wahan: (misspell)
I think a raccoon has been in our barn at night. First, the lid of one of the metal trash cans in which we store grain was off in the morning. Then a can (almost empty) was tipped over. I doubt the deer would have gone into a barn to do that. And I think removing the lid would require hands. Years ago, we saw raccoons rolling one of the grain trash cans around in the driveway in what for all the world seemed like a soccer game. I haven't had any problems since then, but must make sure I have Bungee-corded the lids down tonight.

This afternoon, I was on the deck when I heard an animal moving through the woods. I was surprised -- was my deer back mid-afternoon? I looked out and saw a coyote. I also saw our cat Stella out on the lawn, taking interest in the noise -- and starting to follow it!!!

At that point, I knew I had to intervene, as coyotes eat cats like her. Ran onto the lawn, picked up a rake lying there, and just waited. Figured the coyote wouldn't have the nerve to come onto the lawn with a human present. He'd been heading north, and a little later, I heard the crows raising a ruckus, and figured he'd just passed through their neighborhood.

My husband went off to go fishing with our nephew. Around 5 p.m, samurai and I got our kayaks up on the j-racks on the Prius. This was harder than it was in the past for me, because the Prius is taller than my old Corolla. And then I felt like an idiot. We had these tie-down straps, and I could not remember how to do them. (I bought the kayaks just last summer. I was new to this activity, and obviously still am.)

We finally figured we were good to go, and went down to the lake. A pleasant experience, no biting bugs, just dragonflies that would land on the kayaks or our paddles. Lots of birds scooting overhead. I was hoping to see the great blue heron that lives there, but no luck. Still, a nice sort of meditation.

Which, of course, was somewhat undone when we tried again to figure out how to lash the kayaks back on to the j-racks. I need written instructions with diagrams!

But we got home without anything falling off.. Spouse still out fishing, I'm trying to get the grill going. Haven't seen my deer. Hope I didn't scare deer off.

Oh -- I am hearing something in the woods now.

In my insatiable quest to put a pronoun to this creature besides "it," this morning I actually zoomed in on some photos I did not post last night, looking for, er, beer nuts  deer nuts. Shot was taken too far away to tell. It could be a doe, but the energy really feels "adolescent male."

Also learned that the town administrator is willing to call the likeable but incompetent graphic designer of the newsletter and suggest (this was my idea) that he switch from the newsletter committee to the ADA Committee, which is down to one person. Gordon cannot multitask for the life of him, or pay attention to or remember details. I think this is due to a brain injury he suffered in a motorcycle accident many years ago -- an accident that made him disabled. He is not stupid, and I know he really wants to serve this town. In a meeting to brainstorm ideas or vote on things or whatever the committee does, he'd be an asset. It's just that in his current volunteer position, it doesn't work. It takes me three times as long to get the newsletter out with his "help" as it would if I were doing it alone.

OK, that's all, folks.
