I had some time to kill yesterday between taking stuff to the recycling center and meeting my husband and child for lunch, so I went to Pier One. I find it incredibly amusing that "Asian" decor has become chic. I have some authentic Asian (Japanese, mostly, plus some Thai) antiques that my mother's family brought to this country with them in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Last year, I was able to find a coffee table and side table at Pier One that picked up on the Thai teak-and-marble end tables my great-grandfather's Thai employees made for him (probably at the command of their boss!) when he left the British-empire tugboat firm there for British Columbia. It all works, thematically.
So on Saturday, I went there to see if they had any bamboo placements -- the dining room has evolved into an "east meets west" theme, because my husband's New England family's stuff, my side of the family's Victorian stuff, and the Asian stuff all bump into each other there. It's fun! (The bumping into, I mean. Not the shopping. Although that, too.) Not only did I find bamboo placements, I found black lotus bowls that will pick up on my new dinnerware perfectly -- and on sale! Plus a bamboo table runner that is just what I was envisioning for the old coffee table I am going to put in the screenroom on our deck once I get it up again -- the table runner mainly to hide the stains on the old coffee table!
I am amused that I will come off as a decorating queen, when all I'm trying to do is hide stains....
