Just posted on a community listserv:

"We've got a black bear hanging around in our back yard and it won't leave. Any suggestions--so I can get out to my car?"

Answers that came in:

1. I've heard that throwing tennis balls, and hitting the bear, can work. Good luck!

2. I'd say beep the horn or bang something loud like pots and pans. They are generally not aggressive and would rather leave than be harassed.

3. lack bears don't want anything to do you. Assume car is in front yard; just go get in your car is what I'd do.

4. From Original poster:
It finally wandered off but the pots and pans did not help. Would have just walked to the car but didn't feel like getting within 5 feet of what appeared to be a large and hungry male that was interested in our compost.

5. If it was close to the car and I had to get out in a timely manner, I think I might have hit the car alarm on my key fob. That's such an unusual sound here that it should have startled him away... and give the neighbors a warning at the same time. All from the safety of the house. ;-)

I would call Fish and Game...they have ways of catching bears, to relocate the away from peoples.

Here was another series from today:

LOST GOLDEN RETRIVER
Hi Folks,

Please let us know if you happen to see Stanley, an 80 lb. golden retriever wearing a red collar with Shutesbury tags. He decided to go out on a hike about 1/2 hour ago and hasn’t made it home yet. Stanley’s a friendly guy who likes squeaky toys.

Thanks,
Michael, Kathy and Gio

[later]

Thanks to Michele, Stanley is safe at home. I received a call from Michele no less than 5 minutes after I posted. So, it looks like M earned some “pay it forward” good kharma points today.

On another note, please let me know if you happen to see my wife Kathy who went off looking for Stanley some time ago and hasn’t made it home. If you find her, please pour her a glass of Merlot and give me a call.

*snarf*

That happens in the mountains here around Lake Tahoe. About once a season a bear breaks into a cabin, or tries to, and ends up on the news.
