Catching up, backwards

The minister just called to give me a heads up. The Nominating Committee has been unable to find someone to serve as Vice President next year, when I (currently Vice President) will be President. Therefore, there will be no one to succeed me. So, at an emergency meeting that has been called for tomorrow afternoon, the committee is going to ask me to serve two years as President, instead of one. The reasoning is that we've had an influx of some really good people in the last  year who might make terrific officers of the board, but they are still "too new" to ask. But, some might be ready to be tapped for the role a year from now, so I'd have a Vice President for the 2008-2009 church year.

Hmm. I haven't said no or yes yet. But if I accept, I want it made clear to the congregation that this is not a mad bid for power on my part!

Bob is coming to repaint the pink kitchen walls "summer melon" tomorrow! He set this up yesterday, so I've got to get everything out of his way by around 9 a.m. Aaccck!

Pray that the Account Exec. doesn't demand endless changes in the letter I sent her this morning, because I'll need time to get the kitchen cleared out for Bob.

The letter was actually due Monday, but for some reason, I kept having low blood sugar episodes, which really drain me. Plus, the big hospital it was for is an incredibly complicated and confusing organization, and one new to me at that. The A.E. had sent me a pdf of its annual report (i don't think she'd really looked at it), thinking it would provide enough back ground, but instead it was one of these glossy things with lots of photos and relatively little text. There were a few patient stories, but this is an Annual Fund appeal for acquisition (meaning people who've never donated), and I needed to explain what this institution was all about. Fortunately, the CEO had a page in which she ticked off some accomplishments without really providing any details -- since the Annual Report was sent to major donors, they probably knew what some of details were already. Fortunately, the web site was able to fill me in.

Sunday I went to choir practice, arriving a little late because I'd overslept after treating another low blood sugar at 5 a.m. The service was quite moving, about mothers (including not very good mothers) and those who take the role of mothers, whatever their gender. Late Saturday, one SIL had called to set up a Mother's Day gathering. We were to meet at 1 p.m. at a Chinese restaurant that has a Sunday brunch. I had an hour to kill between church and 1 p.m., so I went back to a local greenhouse and bought some more herbs, broccoli, and a lavendar plant (the one I'd had for about 20 years died two years ago).

I arrived at the restaurant promptly at 1 p.m. and recognized no cars in the parking lot. At 1:10 one SIL showed up. At 1:20 the other SIL showed up, with her daughter and grandkids. At 1:30 my spouse and Samurai finally show up -- their excuse was that they'd headed out from home and realized they'd forgotten to bring the Mother's Day cards. We're still waiting for my nephew and his girl friend to show up. They roll in at about 2 p.m . By this time, we'd given up on them and had hit the buffet line.

I must admit, this restaurant must be good for hungry college students who want an all-you-can-eat meal for only $8.99, but it was not very good. Lots of fried and greasy Americanized Chinese food -- mostly meats and chicken in various incarnations -- and hardly any vegetables! Kind of the opposite of what I've read real Asian meals are like, in which the veggies and rice predominate and the meat/chicken/fish is almost a garnish. Ugh.

I gave my MIL her gift, which had been an impulse purchase at Saturday's talent and treasure auction.

I got some lettuce plants in the garden, had lunch with spouse and Samurai in town, grabbed some groceries, and ran back home to dress appropriately for the fundraising talent and treasure auction at church. I carpooled with the minister and her husband. On the way down, a gray fox ran across the road, to Alison's great delight.

The auction was a very well-run event, with our auctioneers  (two of our own members) doing a great and hilarious job. Except for the Arts & Crafts style floor lamp that I opted not to bid on, there wasn't much that interested me. I considered bidding on pet sitting services offered by a nice couple, but it would have been quite a hike for them to get here, and I dropped out when I saw that other people who live closer to them were interested.

I did bid on a large (about 2 feet tall already) Brandywine heirloom tomato plant. I think Jay, the grower, must have a greenhouse or grow lights. I've planted them here in the past as smaller starts, but the growing season is just too short for them to produce much, if anything. With this big plant, maybe I'll have some luck.

Jay had also brought in a large cactus with a bright red "orchid"-style flower. I bid on that on impulse for my MIL as a Mother's Day gift, since I thought she could use it in her solarium.

We stayed to help clean up afterwards (the auction had been preceded by wine, desserts and live music -- actually, Jay was the pianist! He's excellent.) I finally rolled back into my own driveway at 10:30 p.m.

OK, that's my life the past few days. The AE hasn't been back with comments about the letter (I know she got it), so I think it's time for me to leave the building. We are out of coffee!

New paint! Come paint my kitchen when yours is done. What a great pick-me-up for the decor.

Oh, I'm not painting it myself! I'm hiring Bob, who painted our dining room and bathroom last year. The pink walls are the ones with counters and wall cabinets and windows, so there is lots of "cutting." I'm terrible at that. He's great. If it were the one (pale green) wall that has no cabinets on it -- and thus is just one big, unbroken surface -- I could handle that.

Okay so I want to see a sample of summer melon! And, wow, a gray fox! that must have been so cool to see :-)

OK, the sample is up! :)
